In Wisconsin you have to potentially jeopardize your own identity to learn about your ancestors who died over 100 years ago.
To
obtain these uncertified records you have to send a photocopy of your
driver's license. This begs the question, who's identity are we trying
to protect? Someone who died over 100 years ago? One's drivers license
number and expiration are now common security questions for when you
file your taxes etc.
So the real question is what kind of
personal data protection (PII) policies do these offices have? Once the
requestor's identity has been verified I'd hope they'd destroy that
drivers license photo copy. Else I'd venture to argue they are sitting
on a mountain of potential liability.
